Introduction to the School of Civil Engineering

The School of Civil Engineering at Lanzhou Jiaotong University was established in 1958 by the merger of the Railway Architecture Department and the Railway Bridge and Tunnel Department of Tangshan Railway University (now Southwest Jiaotong University). The school currently has nearly 3400 full-time undergraduate students, nearly 1200 graduate students, and 181 faculty members. The school has 6 doctoral degree authorization points in secondary disciplines such as bridge and tunnel engineering and geotechnical engineering, 11 master's degree authorization points, and 3 master's degree authorization categories.

The school currently has a first level discipline of “Civil Engineering”, a doctoral program in the first level discipline of "Traffic And Transportation Engineering" and a postdoctoral research station. The school has doctoral programs and postdoctoral research stations in the first level disciplines of Civil Engineering and Transportation Engineering. There are 6 doctoral degree authorization points in secondary disciplines such as bridge and tunnel engineering, geotechnical engineering, 11 master's academic degree authorization points, and 3 master's professional degree authorization categories. Civil engineering, hydraulic engineering, and mechanics are the first level key disciplines in Gansu Province.

The school has 7 undergraduate majors. Among them, four majors including civil engineering, engineering management, railway engineering, road bridge and river-crossing engineering have been approved as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and two majors including water conservancy and hydropower engineering and Cost Engineering have been approved as provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites. The three majors of civil engineering, water conservancy and hydropower engineering, and engineering management have respectively passed the engineering education professional certification or professional evaluation organized by the CEEAA and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. The Civil Engineering major is the “National Characteristic Major”, a pilot major for the “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program”, and a pilot major for the “Comprehensive Reform of the First Batch of Undergraduate Majors in Local Universities”. It has characteristic classes such as the “Zhan Tianyou Class”, “Mao Yisheng Class”, and “Excellence Plan Class”. The engineering management major was approved as a provincial innovation and entrepreneurship reform demonstration pilot major in 2018.

The school has many national and provincial teaching and research platforms, including the National Demonstration Center For Experimental Civil Engineering Education, the National and Provincial Joint Engineering Laboratory of Road & Bridge Disaster Prevention and Control, the Laboratory of Road & Bridge Disaster Prevention and Control, the Key Laboratory of Road & Bridge and Underground Engineering of Gansu Province, etc.

The project of “Research on durability of materials and structures in the dry and cold northwest region” has been approved for the Program for Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team in University of Ministry of Education of China. The school have established four national level engineering practice education centers and one national off campus practice education base for undergraduates with enterprises such as China Railway Group Limited.

We actively carry out scientific research on the characteristics of the northwest region, such as dry and cold environments, special geology, high seismic intensity, and strong winds and sands, serving the construction of various levels of railways, highways, urban rail transit, municipal engineering, water conservancy and hydropower engineering, and other industries and regional infrastructure. A stable and distinctive research direction has been formed in the fields of bridge and tunnel structural design theory and engineering application, structural seismic resistance and seismic reduction (isolation) and control theory, durability and engineering application of new materials in special environmental civil engineering, disaster prevention and control research and application in road and bridge engineering, design theory and construction technology in road and railway engineering, large-scale project management and green construction, and key technologies for water conservancy engineering operation and maintenance safety in arid areas.

The school adheres to the educational philosophy of “based in Gansu, facing the whole country, and serving transportation”, upholds the training of “civilization, dedication, practicality, and innovation”, and takes the breakthrough of the first-class discipline of “traffic and transportation engineering” as the guide. The school is guided by the breakthrough in the first-class discipline of “Traffic Transportation Engineering”, continuously achieving new improvements in the level of teaching staff, talent cultivation ability, scientific and technological innovation and social service ability, comprehensive educational conditions, and international educational level, in order to promote the coordinated development of disciplines such as civil engineering, water conservancy engineering, and mechanics.
