Introduction to the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering(SCCE)at Lanzhou Jiaotong University was established in 2001, building upon the foundation of the Chemistry Teaching and Research Office that was set up at the university's inception in 1958. The undergraduate program of Chemistry began enrollment in 1987, followed by the undergraduate program of Applied Chemistry in 2000. In 2001, the School of Chemistry and Biological Engineering was established, and in 2021, following institutional adjustments, it was formally renamed as the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

SCCE currently offers three undergraduate majors: Chemical Engineering and Technology, Applied Chemistry, and Process Equipment and Control Engineering. Among them, Chemical Engineering and Technology is a national first-class major construction site, while Applied Chemistry is a provincial first-class major and provincial characteristic major. It currently has one second-level doctoral program in Environmental Chemical Engineering, two first-level master's programs in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and Technology, one second-level master's program in Chemical Process Machinery, and one professional master's program in Material Chemical Engineering. Among them, Chemistry is a first-class discipline in Gansu Province, which entered the top 1% of the ESI global subject ranking in 2018,and Chemical Engineering and Technology is a key discipline in Gansu Province.

SCCE currently owns 62 faculty members, of which 78% are teachers with senior titles and 71% have doctoral degrees. Among the teachers, there is 1 leading talent in scientific and technological innovation under the National Ten Thousand Talents Program, 1 leading talent in science and technology in Gansu Province, 3 recipients of the Gansu Provincial Young Teachers Achievement Award, 1 model of teacher ethics in Gansu Province, and 1 Feitian Scholar in Gansu Province. In recent years, 8 teachers have been selected into the list of Highly Cited Chinese Researchers published by Elsevier. Simultaneously, it has presided over the construction of 2 provincial-level teaching teams and 7 provincial-level first-class courses. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 200 scientific research projects of various types, and published over 600 academic papers in internationally influential academic journals, including more than 60 highly cited papers.

SCCE boasts a national-level undergraduate excellence engineering program practical teaching base, a national-level innovation and entrepreneurship education base for college students, and a national-level simulation experimental teaching demonstration center. Additionally, several provincial-level centers have been established, including the Gansu Provincial Chemical Engineering Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the Gansu Provincial Hazardous Chemicals Practitioners Training Center, the Provincial Joint Graduate Training Demonstration Base, the Gansu Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center for Biological Pesticides and Green Prevention and Control Technology, and the Gansu Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine-Derived Pesticide Innovation Engineering Research Center. Furthermore, the college hosts multiple university-level research platforms, including the Environmental Chemical Engineering and Energy Research Center, the Nanocatalysis and Environmental New Materials Research Center, the Fine Chemical Engineering Research Institute, the Polymer Surface and Interface Research Institute, and the Water Treatment Research Institute.

SCCE enrolls students from over 30 provinces (cities, autonomous regions) nationwide and has cultivated nearly 10,000 talents in various fields of chemistry and chemical engineering. Looking ahead, the college will uphold the motto of "practicality, creativity, self-improvement and efficiency" and promote the school spirit of "loving the school and dedication, unity and cooperation, striving for progress, and rigorous academic pursuit". As one of the cradles for cultivating specialized talents in chemistry and chemical engineering in the west, it strives to build itself into a high-level teaching and research institute with distinct characteristics, geographical advantages, and high influence.
